“I think we as a community need to come back to center. On the one end, we are so unforgiving, judgmental and harsh towards others and ourselves. On the other end, we think any mention of right or wrong is being ‘too judgmental.’ I think again and again we’re missing the point. In an attempt to push our interpretations of rules and regulations, we’re missing priorities like adab (manners) and akhlaq (character). In an attempt to ‘enjoin good and forbid evil’ we’ve developed a squad of ‘haram police’—but forgotten the heart. We do this, although our Prophet (pbuh) has told us that the heart is the master. He said, ‘In the body there is a lump of flesh, if it is set right, the entire body is set right. If it is corrupted, the entire body is corrupted. Verily, it is the heart.’ Let’s come back to center. Let’s come back to the core. Let’s stop talking about whether Valentine’s Day is haram or halal. Let’s look deeper at where our problem lies.
“Iman (faith) is not outer decoration, nor mere hope. Rather it is what settles in the heart and what is affirmed by actions.
“Stick to the truth even if the truth kills you.
“Place the affairs of your brother when they reach you upon the best of interpretations until there comes to you clarity which overcomes that. Do not think ill of a statement which comes from another Muslim if you can find a good interpretation for it.
“Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not have kinship, and therefore, He does not grant anyone special status, favors, or exemptions, except with regards to obeying His command and abstaining from what He forbids.
“The heart is the chief and it controls man. We must therefore consider the heart, examine it and purify it--perhaps, it contains impurities. Man might pretend to perform good deeds through the limbs but there might be in his heart this corrupt impurity that leads one to the fire in the end.
“Whoever considers the nearness of death in his heart, will see what he has and owns as being abundant.
“Sometimes the Almighty creates situations of distress to help us recognize Him, turn to Him, realize our wrongdoings, and become sincere.
“Desires make slaves out of kings and patience makes kings out of slaves.
“With good manners, you will understand knowledge. With knowledge, you will correct your actions. With actions, you will attain wisdom. With wisdom, you will comprehend zuhd (renouncing of the worldly life) and be granted it. With zuhd, you will abandon the worldly life. With abandonment of the worldly life, you will long for the hereafter. And with longing of the hereafter, you will achieve Allaah’s contentment.
“The Prophet (saw) meant that we should be kind to those who are close to becoming Muslim, and to not make things difficult on them at the beginning. The same is true for discouraging people from sins, it should be done gradually, for when something is easy at the beginning, it will become beloved to those entering it, and they will easily take it to heart, and it often leads to an increase (in devotion) rather than a decrease.
“Ibn al-Musayyib, the preeminent tabi`i, rarely gave a fatwa without saying: "O God! Please make me safe, and make people safe from me!"
“Whoever gives fatwas (definitive answers) to every (religious) question people put to him is indeed a mad man. (i.e. people should acknowledge their limits of knowledge rather than behaving like they know everything)
“The one who acts without knowledge is like a wayfarer without a way, and such a person ruins more than he fixes. Therefore seek knowledge, in a way that doesn't harm your worship, and seek worship, in a way that doesn't harm your knowledge seeking, for there was a nation that sought worship and neglected knowledge, until they went out with their swords against the ummah (nation) of Muhammad peace be upon him. Had they sought knowledge, it wouldn't have led them to what they did.
“When God intends good for someone He gives Him knowledge of the deen (religion).
“Imam al-Bukhari titled a chapter in the Knowledge volume of his collection of sahih traditions "Knowledge Before Words and Deeds". The scholars who explained al-Bukhari's works say that by using this title he wanted to show that knowledge is a condition for the correctness of speech and actions, for these two cannot be judged without it, since knowledge is prior to them and determines the correctness of intentions and the correctness of actions. They said: This is what al-Bukhari wanted to say, so that it does not occur to people's minds--due to the common saying that knowledge is useless without action--that knowledge is of little value, and so that they may not neglect the importance of seeking it.
