“He who appoints himself a leader of men in religion ought to begin by teaching himself and reforming his character, his way of life, livelihood, opinion, speech, and the company he keeps, to the end that his own life becomes a more eloquent teacher than his tongue. For just as words of wisdom please the ears, so acts of wisdom please the eyes and hearts ... The difference between religion and opinion is that religion is fortified by faith while opinion is fortified by dispute. He who makes his religion a point of dispute has turned religion into opinion while he who makes his opinion a religion becomes a legislator and whoever lays down the law for himself has no religion.

Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ

“God has made it obligatory upon Himself toward the person who reads the Quran and acts by it to never let him go astray in this world and to protect him from torment and ruin in the Hereafter.

Ibn Abbas

“God, glory to Him, created His creation to worship Him, and that is their purpose, as He says: “I have not created jinn and humans except to worship Me” [Quran 51:56]. It is clear that the perfect servitude and worship that is required of humans cannot be achieved in the Home of Bliss [Paradise], but can only be achieved in the home of affliction and trials.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“God, glory to Him, wanted to take among the children of Adam prophets, messengers, friends and martyrs, loved by Him and loving toward Him. Therefore He withdrew Himself from them to let them deal with His enemies on their own, in this way testing them. When they preferred Him and strove with their souls and wealth in His way, they earned His love and approval and closeness to Him, which would have been impossible to earn without this process [of testing].

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“God joins guidance with struggle in His saying “as for those who strive in Our cause, We shall surely guide them to Our ways”. The most perfect among the people when it comes to guidance are those who struggle the most in His cause, and the most obligatory struggle is the struggle against the ego and against desires, and the struggle against Satan and against the worldly life.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Patience is to withhold the ego from vengeance when one has the ability to carry it out, to withhold the tongue from complaining, and to withhold the limbs from sinning.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Whoever loves something other than God will be tormented by it three times in this world: He will be tormented by its lack before he acquires it, and once he acquires it he is tormented by the fear of losing it [...] and when he loses it, his torment increases further.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Do not consider God’s saying “the righteous will be in bliss, and the wicked will be in a fire” to only apply to the bliss and torment of the afterlife.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Of the most beneficial cures is relentlessness in supplication. Its opposite is for the servant to be hasty, so that when the answer is delayed his heart breaks and he gives up supplication.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“When a preacher does not act upon his own knowledge, what he preaches will fall off people’s hearts the way water falls off a rock.

Ibn al-Jawzi

“By the amount that you yourself benefit from the knowledge you have will others benefit by your knowledge.

Ibn al-Jawzi

“Whoever is watchful toward God’s boundaries will be under His watchful care and protection.

Ibn al-Jawzi

“Is there anyone who has achieved closeness to God and not found that with Him is everything that they need and desire?

Ibn al-Jawzi

“No one has attained [spiritual] success except by going against their ego’s desires, and no one has suffered [spiritual] failure except by preferring the worldly life over the afterlife.

Ibn al-Jawzi

“It is from arrogance to commit a minor sin, see something good happen in your life, and neglect repentance thinking that your minor sins are automatically forgiven.

Abu Ali al-Rudhbari

“When the servant sins, God will prohibit him from carrying out qiyam [spending part or all of the night in worship].

Bishr al-Hafi

“No one worships God by something more beloved to Him than the abandoning of sins.

Muhammad bin Ka`b

“No servant disobeys God except that God, glory to Him, will cause him some form of humiliation and disgrace.

al-Hasan al-Basri

“The best good deeds are those that one has to force the ego to perform.

Umar ibn Abdul Aziz

“Whoever attains dominion over his ego’s desires in his youth, God will grant him dominion in his old age, as happened to Yusuf, peace be upon him.

Abu Ali al-Nisaburi
