“Sufyan Ath-Thawri said: "Du`a' on that night is more beloved to me than salah". He meant that do make much du`a' is better than a salah that doesn't include much du`a'. And if he recited [i.e. performed salah] and made du`a' that would be good and the Prophet ﷺ used to perform tahajjud in the nights of Ramadan and he would recite a rolling recitation and wouldn't pass a verse that mentioned mercy except that he asked [for it from Allah] and he wouldn't pass a verse that mentioned punishment except that he sought protection [from Allah]. Thus he would combine salah, recitation, du`a', and reflection. And this is the best and the most complete form of good deeds in the last ten nights [of Ramadan] and all other times.
