Quotes About Tawbah (Repentance)

“It was said to [The Prophet’s grandson] Al-Hassan: ”Is not the servant [of God] ashamed of sinning and then repenting, and then sinning again and then again repenting?”

He [Al-Hassan] said: “Satan wants exactly that. Never stop making repentance.”

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali

“When somebody turns to Allah, don’t worry about the means; guidance will come. Balance will come.

Nouman Ali Khan

“More than one person has said to me: "When I repent to Him; [turn to (Him) in obedience, avoiding disobedience, depending on him and seeking refuge in Him] and performing righteous actions; my sustenance is straitened and difficulty comes upon my livelihood. However, when I return to disobeying Him and give my soul its desires, then sustenance, relief and other than it comes to me.’’ So I said to some of them: "This is a test from Him to see whether you are truthful or untruthful in your seeking refuge with Him, responding and submitting to Him in obedience and exercising patience upon (what He has decreed of afflictions for you with absolute justice and wisdom) so that there are (good) end results for you; or whether you are untruthful so that you return to what you were upon (of evil)."

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“The essence of tawbah is to return to Allāh and to adhere to what He loves and renounce that which He dislikes. Tawbah is a journey from the disliked to the liked.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“How do you know if Allah has forgiven you? When someone sincerely asks for forgiveness, then there is no doubt they are forgiven. It is guaranteed. Never doubt if Allah forgave you. First of all be sincere and genuine, and if you meet that condition then there is no doubt.

Nouman Ali Khan

“There is a powerful and amazing thing about tawbah (repentance) and turning back to Allah (swt). We are told that it is a polish for the heart. What’s amazing about a polish is that it doesn’t just clean. It makes the object that is polished even shinier than it was before it got dirty. If you come back to God, seek His forgiveness, and refocus your life and heart on Him, you have the potential to be even richer than if you’d never fallen at all. Sometimes falling and coming back up gives you wisdom and humility that you may never otherwise have had.

Yasmin Mogahed

“Don’t you wish your life had a delete button? Well, at least you have repentance.

Abdulbary Yahya

“By the mercy of God, Paradise has eight doors. One of those is the door of repentance, child. All the others are sometimes open, sometimes shut, but the door of repentance is never closed. Come seize the opportunity: the door is open; carry your baggage there at once.

Rumi

“Come even though you have broken your vows a thousand times, Come, and come yet again. Ours is not a caravan of despair.

Rumi

“All humans err. And the best of those who err are the truly repentant.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

“Happiness is attained by three things: being patient when tested, being thankful when receiving a blessing, and being repentant upon sinning.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Dont grieve at the fall. The ground is where humility lives. And humility waters the garden of tawbah...the only path to God.

Yasmin Mogahed

“A sign of true repentance from a past sin is that remembering the sin only brings pangs of remorse, and not memories of pleasure.

Yasir Qadhi

“Sit with those who constantly repent, for they have the softest hearts.

Umar ibn al-Khattab

“There are five dark matters and five lamps. Love of this world is darkness, and the fear of Allaah is its lamp. Sin is darkness, and its lamp is repentance. The grave is darkness, and its lamp is ‘none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah.’ The hereafter is darkness, and its lamp is the good deed. The Siraat is darkness, and its lamp is certainty of faith.

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq

“‎Sins need to be burnt, either with the pain of regret in this world or with the hellfire in the hereafter.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“Sins to a heart are like oil drops on a cloth—unless you wash it immediately and vigorously, it will permanently stain.

Ibn al-Jawzi

“The planning of The Almighty is better for you than your own planning, and He could deprive you from what you ask to test your patience. So let Him see from you a determined patience and you will soon see from Him what will give you joy. And when you have cleaned the paths of answering from the stains of sins and were patient about what He has chosen for you, then everything that happens to you is better for you whether you were given or deprived of what you have requested.

Ibn al-Jawzi
