Quotes About Islamic Scholars, Teachers and Leaders

“Many sheikhs and scholars live in books and do not live in reality ... because they have not read the book of life like they have read the books written by the ancients, for this reason their rulings seem to be coming out of the graves.

Yusuf al-Qaradhawi

“You don’t have to like a speaker or a scholar to learn from them. Humble yourself and really listen.

Tariq Ramadan

“Scholars are not stars, they are educators. Stars believe the audience is there to serve them, scholars believe they are there to serve the community.

Tariq Ramadan

“A man leaves from his house having sins similar in size to the Mount of Tuhaama. But when he hears some knowledge, he becomes fearful and repents. He returns to his home afterwards with no sins. Thus you should never abandon attending the gatherings of the scholars.

Umar ibn al-Khattab

“The scholar who has every knowledge must not cause people to despair in Allah's mercy, and will not dare them in disobeying Allah. Making haram things halal is kufr, and despair of the mercy of Allah is kufr.

Ibn Taymiyyah

“Islam is not about following charismatic leaders and scholars. It is to follow a message. This message is asking you to be intellectually, spiritually, socially, politically independent… and courageous.

Tariq Ramadan

“We are not following scholars: they are serving the community and should not be served by the community. Our teachers should be means for us to come close to God and our Knowledge should be also means for us to serve Him better and to serve the society.

Tariq Ramadan

“A true teacher doesn't teach you to think like him, but to think without him.

Tariq Ramadan

“Jihaad (striving) against the soul has four stages: Firstly: To strive in learning guidance and the religion of truth, without which there will be no success. Indeed, there can be no true happiness, nor any delight in this world and in the Hereafter, except through it. Secondly: Striving to act upon what has been learnt, since knowledge without action will not benefit, rather it will cause harm. Thirdly: Striving to invite others towards it and to teach those who do not know, otherwise he may be considered from those who hide what Allaah has revealed of guidance and clear explanation. Such knowledge will neither benefit, nor save a person from the punishment of Allaah. Fourthly: Striving to be patient and persevering against those who oppose this da’wah (call) to Allaah and those who seek to cause harm - patiently bearing all these hardships for the sake of Allaah.

When these four stages are completed then such a person is considered to be amongst the Rabbaaniyyoon [the Godly ones]. The Salaf were agreed that a Scholar does not deserve the title of Rabbaanee until he recognises and knows the truth, acts upon it, and teaches it to others. So whosoever has knowledge, acts upon it, and teaches this knowledge to others, is considered from the Rabbaaniyyoon.

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

“A good teacher teaches his students to respect him; a great teacher teaches them to disagree with his own opinions while respecting them.

Yasir Qadhi

“Someone addressed al-Sha`bi (d. 105 AH) by saying, "O Scholar!" to which he replied, "The scholar is only the one who fears Allah."

Amir ibn Sharahil ash-Sha`bi

“Most people are convinced by the good manners and humility of a teacher; not his intellectual sophistry or debate skills.

Yasir Qadhi

“I swear that Iblis rejoices more at the death of one scholar than he does for 1000 worshipers.

Muhammad al-Baqir

“The scholar/knowledgeable one should have good deeds stored in secret between him and Allah the Most High. Indeed, all that he manifests of knowledge or deeds to the people, will be of little benefit in the Hereafter.

Imam ash-Shafi`i
