Of the signs of the wretchedness and misery of the servant [of Allah]:
That whenever his knowledge increases, his arrogance and pride increase, and whenever his [good] deeds increase, his boastfulness and self-love increase, and whenever his age increases, his aggressiveness and desperation increase, and whenever his wealth increases, his stinginess and miserliness increase, and whenever his lot and prestige increases, his distance from people and his looking down on them and disregarding them increases.
